Emphasis on Education
Resolution Copper’s extended project timeline – production is anticipated to begin in 2019 – means the majority of our future workforce is currently of elementary-school age. Development of a workforce with the scientific, technological, engineering and math expertise we require is key to our business strategy. Preparing qualified employees involves extensive collaboration with Arizona’s learning institutions from elementary through post-secondary schooling. We currently place significant emphasis on education through scholarships, internships and other capacity-building programs, and we are looking at ways to expand our focus on education, training and human resource development.
Program highlights include:
Resolution Copper Scholarship Program
The Resolution Copper Scholarship program is currently on hold. We hope to resume the program in 2009.
2007 marked the sixth year of the Resolution Copper Scholarship program, which benefits students attending an Arizona university, community college or business/trade school. To date, we have awarded more than $140,000 in scholarships, and 19 Resolution Copper Scholarship recipients are currently attending Arizona universities. The four-year, $6,000 renewable grants are provided to students who concentrate on math, science, engineering or business. Recipients are selected by a school-appointed committee. The program includes high schools in Apache Junction, Globe, Miami, Hayden, Winkelman, Florence, San Carlos and Superior.
Resolution Copper Summer Intern Program
Our company also aids student development by enabling educational experiences beyond the classroom. One popular example is the Resolution Copper Summer Intern program. Our 2008 session is coming to a close after which our six interns will return to their college studies. Representing Superior, Gold Canyon, Mesa, Tempe and Gilbert, our 2008 interns are pursuing academic disciplines including chemical engineering, mining engineering, animal sciences, applied science in psychology, and anthropology.
Many Resolution Copper interns return to the program for successive summers, and it is our hope that their education, interests and skills development will lead them to become part of our future workforce.
Anytown Camp
Resolution Copper was also proud to provide financial support to four students to attend Anytown Camp during 2008. The camp helps prepare young people for effective leadership in their communities and teaches them a range of valuable life skills.
The four scholarship winners, one each from Globe, Winkelman, Superior and San Carlos, were selected by local community leaders. Resolution Copper's scholarships paid for camp tuition, room and board, as well as transportation to and from the camp.
