Environment Is Top Concern of Those Surveyed

Of those who oppose the mine, environmental concerns are the top reasons for doing so. Twelve percent of those in the Copper Triangle (compared with 23 percent of Superior residents) are concerned with the loss of the Oak Flat campground which would go to Resolution Copper as part of the land exchange. Twenty-five percent of those in the Copper Triangle (compared with 19 percent of Superior residents) are concerned that development of the mine would negatively impact the land.

Summary results can be viewed on the Resolution Copper Mining website.

Results of this fall 2007 survey will help to drive communication tactics and focus during 2008. We also took a variety of steps throughout the last year to educate stakeholders about the company’s approach to their environmental concerns.

For example, a series of articles authored by Resolution Copper Mining’s past president John Rickus appeared in the Superior Sun and other community and regional newspapers to inform the public on the company’s stance regarding (among other topics):

• our commitment to providing access to the popular Oak Flat campground as long as it is safe to do so, and our resolve to locate a suitable replacement campground for hikers, campers and other nature enthusiasts

• the company’s environmental approach to water procurement and water management

• the environmental impact of a block cave mining approach and the steps we’re taking to ensure protection of the Apache Leap area once mining begins

For the benefit of local stakeholders, we opened the Resolution Mine Information office in downtown Superior and established our Project Information hotline–a phone service that allows stakeholders to ask questions or be placed in contact with a Resolution Copper Mining employee or manager.

We also held a series of forums to update stakeholders about the Resolution Project and to answer questions. And we were involved with community groups focused on environmental and economic development in Superior and surrounding areas.

In December 2007, we distributed the premiere edition of the Resolution Copper Issues Brief. The Issues Brief is a periodic publication intended to inform key Resolution Copper Mining stakeholders about the company’s priorities, challenges, plans and progress, as well as key developments from our parent company, Rio Tinto.

In all our communications and interactions with stakeholders, we strive for openness and transparency. We will survey stakeholders again in 2008.
