2007 Sustainable Development Report
Social Well-Being | Chapter Contents
People are our company’s greatest asset–the employees
who join our ranks, the many contractors and suppliers
who contribute to our progress, and the greater community
in which we operate all affect and are affected by the way
we do business.
Safety First
The safety of those who work for the company is our
top priority–one we consider both a challenge and an
opportunity. Keeping our employees and contractors safe
is fundamental to our workplace culture as well as our
business success. Our goal is and will remain zero injuries.
By June 2007, we had reached more than 500 days with no
accidents or injuries causing time lost on the job. However,
our positive record was halted when, in September 2007, a
contractor working on the Superior job site was involved in
a fatal accident. The accident involved a drill helper from
Major Drilling USA, Inc., a contractor providing services for
the Resolution Project. The worker was fatally injured at the
start of his shift while performing pre-shift checks on the
diamond drill where he was working. Investigations by the
regulatory authorities and Major Drilling were instituted,
and an internal RCM investigatory team was also formed
to conduct an inquiry into the accident in accordance
with Rio Tinto requirements. The review identified several
areas where processes related to the operation of drilling
contractors could be improved. The improvements, to
be undertaken at a business unit level, will initially be
facilitated by Rio Tinto HSE. They include a review and
revision of safety systems for working on the drill rig,
interactive training of crews with emphasis on hazard
recognition, preventing “creeping” nonconformity with
safety procedures, safety steps for working in isolation from
other crew members, and a pre-task risk assessment.
