2007 Sustainable Development Report
Business Profile | Chapter Contents
Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Systems
The company’s HSE responsibilities are structured to
ensure companywide compliance. The vice president of
Health, Safety and Environment and Construction supports
the president and all operational departments to embed
sustainable development principles into the company’s
decision making. Key staff within the HSE function are
accountable for developing policies and providing advice and
guidance to employees, while immediate supervisors must
ensure employees and contractors who work on-site act in
accordance with these policies and procedures. Examples
include a comprehensive Health, Safety and Environment policy, annual Mine Safety and Health Administration
(MSHA) training, formal risk assessments, safety interactions,
personal safety action plans, and local and global safety
audits. Resolution Copper Mining also has a disaster recovery
manual that provides formal, step-by-step direction on
how to handle crises and emergencies. Employees take part
in annual desktop audits to ensure their competence in
handling potential catastrophic events.
In 2007 Resolution Copper Mining achieved an important
sustainable development milestone. We applied for and
received ISO 14001:2004 certification of our Environmental
Management System by an independent third-party auditor.
Our parent company, Rio Tinto, requires us to maintain this
certification, and we have processes in place for ongoing
training and regular audits. More information on our
environmental plans and governance is available in the
Environmental Stewardship section of this report.
To ensure compliance in our record-keeping and to enhance
internal data controls and procedures, we also instituted
Documentum, a formal document records management
system.
