Challenges

Land exchange:
Passage of land exchange legislation needed to enable development of the Resolution Project mine was not achieved in 2007. This is a top priority for 2008. Further delay by Congress may impact the company’s rate of growth and could affect short-term economic development, including employment opportunities and company spending in Superior and the region.

Safety performance:
A drilling contractor was involved in a fatal on-site accident in Superior during 2007. There were also six medical treatment cases in 2007 involving Resolution Copper Mining contractors.

Community grievances:
The company responded to five formal complaints in 2007. Local grievances were from residents regarding noise and odor thought to be coming from the property. One inquiry came from an outside environmental group concerned about the project and its potential environmental impacts.

Apache concerns:
Some representatives of the San Carlos Apache Tribe voiced their concern about the cultural significance of Oak Flat and the potential negative impact mining could have on that area.
