2007 Achievements and Challenges | Chapter Contents
Achievements Environmental management: Received ISO 14001:2004
certification of our Environmental Management System (EMS).
The company’s EMS includes the plans, policies and procedures
we use to manage and continually improve our approach to the
environment.
Local hire: Hired 87.5 percent, or seven out of eight, Level 1
contractors locally through Superior-based Copper Triangle
Mining.
Communities:
To encourage easy community access to RCM
information and staff, opened a Mine Information office in
downtown Superior and initiated a Resolution Project
Information hotline.
Employee benefits: Introduced an experience-based vacation
calculation policy. For example, if an employee with one year
of tenure at Resolution Copper Mining arrived at the company
with seven years of related experience, the vacation allowance
is calculated on a total of eight years. Also provided new 401(k)
employee investment options.
Training: All employees and those contractors involved in
mine site-related work completed training on Rio Tinto and
RCM working standards, including sustainable development
principles.
Rehabilitation efforts: Rehabilitation of the West Plant area
north of Superior, the site of mining activity from 1910 to 1996,
continued. 2007 progress goals achieved.
Water management: Signed an agreement with the New
Magma Irrigation and Drainage District to accept extracted,
treated water from the RCM water treatment facility, then to
use it for irrigation. Continued to purchase excess Central
Arizona Project (CAP) water and bank it for future use.
Corporate headquarters: Using local contractors, completed
sustainable rehabilitation of a historic building in Superior,
which now serves as Resolution Copper’s corporate
headquarters. The “Verde Building” was honored with the
2007 Award of Merit for Historic Preservation of Buildings
and Structures by Valley Forward’s Environmental Excellence
Awards (EEA) program.
