2007 Sustainable Development Report
Sustainable Development: An Explanation
Sustainable development is most commonly defined as
“development that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their
own needs.” Due to explosive world population growth, this
approach is now a global imperative.
We are living in a world of unprecedented demographic
change. After growing very slowly for most of human
history, the world’s population more than doubled in the last
half-century and by 2006 had reached 6.7 billion (Source:
United Nations Population Fund). Lower mortality, longer
life expectancy and a youthful population in countries
where fertility remains high have all contributed to the rapid
population growth of recent decades.
According to the 2006 revision of a United Nations
Population Fund report, the world population is expected to
rise in the next 43 years by 2.5 billion, reaching a total of 9.2
billion by 2050.
These future generations will depend upon industries
like ours to meet their needs in socially, economically and
environmentally responsible ways. Consequently, we strive to
run our business in an ethical and responsible manner, and
we incorporate sustainable development into the fabric of our
everyday approach.
This report addresses how we plan, track and measure our
ability to provide social, economic and environmental value
that will last well beyond the life of the mine we seek to
operate. Note:
All financial amounts expressed throughout this report are
in US dollars.
